The VOICE of the People's ChurchText Box: Luciano Pavarotti tells the story about how he made the choice to be a singer. At a young age, his father introduced him to singing and he took to it with great skill and enthusiasm. At one time in Pavarotti’s life, he was enrolled in both vocal lessons from a professional tenor and college studies to be a teacher. When he graduated from school, he faced a dilemma to either become a signer or to become a teacher. When he asked his father about which course to take, his father responded: “If you try to sit on two chairs, you will fall between them. For life, you must choose one chair.” Commitment is the key. Choose one chair.
Back in the 1770s, our country’s forefathers had to make a choice about which chair in which to sit. They could remain under the hand of the British or they could choose to fight for their freedom, and become independent. As we all know they chose to fight for their freedom which is also our freedom. This Sunday, we celebrate Independence Day and commemorate the independence and freedoms that we enjoy as Americans. I am glad that our forefathers chose freedom.
Back in the first century, another person had to make a choice about which chair He would choose. Since the beginning of time, He had occupied the chair at the right hand of God the Father in heaven. But He made a choice to get out of that chair and come to earth to accept the chair of death for your sins and mine. As you know His name was Jesus, and He chose to die on the cross of Calvary for our freedom and independence

from sin.  He chose to become sin for us so that we might be set free from the chains of sin and death.

During our service on Sunday morning, we will commemorate our freedom as Christians around the Lord’s Table.  We will pause to thank God for being fortunate enough to live in the land of the free where we can worship Him, and for the grace that has set us free to live life abundantly.  I pray you will take time from your 4th of July celebration to come and worship God and thank Him for His gifts to us.

On a personal note, I need a favor.  My mother will be coming back with us from our time of vacation (which I will begin on July 8th).  Because she will be flying home at the end of her visit, she is not able to bring her walker with her.  If anyone has one that she could use while she is visiting us in July, I would appreciate it.  She will be with us from July 13 through July 27.
