The VOICE of the People's ChurchText Box: In one of the passages of scripture that I will be preaching from on Sunday morning, Peter has been called on the carpet by some other Christian leaders in Jerusalem. It seems to them that Peter has been hanging out with the wrong crowd. This group is upset with Peter because he has led some Gentiles to follow Jesus as Savior. While they use the guise that Peter has been eating unclean foods, it really has more to do with their fear of change and the power of God’s word to bring about this change. During the service on Sunday morning, we will be looking at how God’s love and offer of salvation is to everyone, not just a select few. Just as the early Jewish Christians felt that everyone should be “like them”, we can sometimes fall into the same boat if we are not careful. We can begin to think that everyone should be just “like us” if we do not guard against this way of thinking.
As we all know, our community, our city, and our county have changed over the years. In fact, I have observed a number of changes just in the almost two years that I have been here. A part of us would like to keep things just the way they have always been. However, this is not possible nor is it the right thing to do. We have to move forward with the changes that have/are taking place and find ways to reach our neighbors with the Gospel message of God’s love for them.
Last week, I had a meeting with four of our members who, along with me, have a burden on our hearts that we, as a church, need to reach out to our

community and throughout Rowan County.  As a result of this meeting, I am asking you to join with us in praying for and participating in a special Outreach Day on May 22.  On that Saturday, we will gather in the Rhyne Building at 8:45 a.m. for a snack breakfast, a time of prayer, and to receive assignments of streets to visit.  We will go out at 9:30 and invite people to our church.  There will be door hangers and brochures available to leave at each home we contact.  We will then return to the church at 11:30 where we will share of our experiences and have lunch together.  My prayer is that this will become an ongoing project of our church, to reach out to the families in our community, and then move throughout our county.  Will it be easy?  No.  It will be hard work that will take determination, time, and effort, but it will be worth it.

This is something that I believe must take place in order for our church to grow, both spiritually and numerically.  Will you join with this small nucleus of five to become a strong band of members concerned with reaching Rowan County with the Good News?  If you will, please join in the prayer room each Sunday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. to pray for Operation Outreach.  You can also join us for planning sessions on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. in Conference Room #1.

Hope you have a great week.  I also want to encourage you to take the time to tell someone about Christ and what He has done in your life.
