Text Box: RON’S NOTES

For the last few weeks I have been telling you about a music survey that is coming. Today I would like to tell you about the early church in worship. Remember, this is "food for thought". Robert Webber, a professor at Wheaton College and student of the first century church says this about worship.
“The Bible calls this the House of the Lord. So let's examine what happens during your time in the Lord's House.

At the door of the house is where we greet each other just like in a normal setting. This is a joyous time with happy feelings. The early church used this time to sing happy songs, Psalms of Joy. They may sing several Psalms.
As we move into the living room of the Lord's House this is the time for testimony. We ask how things are going with each other’s family and so on. The music would change to a different style such as traditional hymns.
As we move to the dining room our conversation and music changes to preparation for the feast which is God's Word being brought to the table. The music may be joyous as we prepare for food we like to eat, or it may be thoughtful as we prepare to receive a new food that we have not eaten.
Following dinner we prepare to depart. As we prepare to leave, our thoughts and our song of departure should be the same as when we came to the front door. We have renewed old acquaintances, enjoyed the food (God's Word and fellowship with Him), and look forward to the next visit. It is not a somber time, but a time of Joy.

Think about this the next time you come to THE LORD’S HOUSE.

Also worth noting, Robert Webber is Episcopalian. I have had the privilege of sitting under him, and he has taught Billy Graham's minister of music.

This is a good thought about blended service.

P.S.  They knew their Psalms by heart so that they could sing together. A projection and screen would help us to lift our voices as opposed to having our heads in a book. The Bible says to lift your voices to God in Praise. Just a Thought.
